Music Stores
Music stores are a great resource to gather supplies and work with knowledgable staff especially if you are new to the band world or just unfamiliar to your student's instrument. Working with staff can ensure that you are gathering the correct, quality supplies for your student so they can properly maintain their instrument in good-working order. Though NTS can provide an instrument for your student to rent on a first come first serve basis, it is highly encouraged that families enroll in rent-to-own programs so that your student owns their instrument and have a sense of pride that comes to instrument ownership. Some music stores provide "step-up" instruments as well when your student is ready for a more quality instrument especially if they decide to pursue music in high school.
Taking Private Lessons
Fortunately for the community in the Tahoe-Truckee area, there are the opportunities to have your student take private lessons. With private lessons, students have the opportunity to work one-on-one with a lessons instructor specialized with your student's instrument. This could provide the extra help or acceleration that your student needs to stay motivated and improve their skills.

Encouraging Your Student's Practice
Similarly to any other subject in school, it is important for your young musician to develop their skills and coordination through practice. Learning an instrument is a very involved process, learning to read music notation, building the muscle, and the coordination to play with a characteristic, good sound. Parent involvement in their student practice will vastly improve a student's motivation and commitment to learning their new instrument.

If you would like to help but don't have the time to arrange a lesson with Ms. Vedova, there will be some articles provided on how to encourage your young musician to practice and feel motivated throughout the year. Please feel free to access them.

What if you have never played and instrument and you want to help your student but you don't know where to start? That's okay. You and your student can get a lesson with Ms. Vedova on learning the fundamentals of practice and how you can motivate your child to practice even when things become a little hectic throughout the school year.
